The African Hippo lives in the South of Africa. They live in rivers and lakes that are not too deep and not too shallow. Good conditions for a hippo. Hippo’s drink water and they eat grass. A hippo eats up to ninety pounds of food a night. Every year hundreds of hippos are shot by humans. Poachers want their tusks so they do any thing they can to get them.
The word hippopotamus comes from the Greek word hippos meaning horse. Did you know that they were once called river horses?
